During the day, the banner has been carried by around 70,000 Italians.

It has been seen in cities including Rome, Palermo, Cagliari, Lecce, Milano, Turin, and Milan.

It’s not immediately clear how many people have taken to the flag, which was put up before the service began in St Peter’s Square and is visible from both sides of the square.

Italy has two churches, one Roman Catholic and one Protestant. The church of St Peter is Catholic and the church of Santa Maria Croce is Protestant.
